Every Picture Tells A Story

Starley Road Triptych
This is Starley Road in Coventry UK, an organisation I was involved with squatted a couple of houses there in the mid 70s. Then back in the early 1980s the residents in the street fought a battle against Coventry City Council who wanted to demolish the houses to make way for a city centre car park/ road widening scheme.

Eventually the Residents Committee won a planning application appeal against the Council and in celebration the mural you can see in the middle of this triptych was painted.

The sign in the centre of the mural announces "We Saved it!".

This caused real anger amongst the City Councillors, more than I think the residents knew at the time, I recall one senior member, and ex lord mayor, saying "They are sticking two fingers up at us, and I have to fucking see it each time I go past."

Nice that over time the judicious planting has now hidden the mural from the road.
